Treatment of gingivitis: what are the symptoms?
In some cases, patients may not even notice that they have gingivitis, as some people may have more than one set of symptoms, while others may not even notice the problem. A common symptom of gingivitis is bleeding gums and gum sensitivity, which is most often experienced when eating or brushing. The gums may also turn red instead of pink and may become swollen and painful. For many people, gingivitis is not painful at all, so they ignore it. As a result, and without treatment of gingivitis, further complications can occur, which can even lead to tooth loss.
Treating gingivitis: what might be behind it?
As is often the case with most inflammation, the body is trying to defend itself against an incoming foreign substance, which is usually a bacterium. In the case of gingivitis, the situation is similar, as the gums are trying to defend themselves against the bacteria that is irritating the gums, most commonly the accumulated plaque. Calculus can build up not only between the teeth, but also between the gums and the teeth, causing constant irritation to the gums.
As a result, the gums can become inflamed and sensitive. It is not for nothing that we tell our patients all the time how important it is to have regular dental hygiene treatment to help us get rid of tartar and thus avoid the need to treat gingivitis.
Although gingivitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene, there may be other reasons behind it:
allergies,
hormonal problems,
side effects of medication,
a vitamin deficiency,
autoimmune disease.
Before treating gingivitis, it is important to identify the root cause of the problem so that it can be treated effectively.
