  • Bone replacement for tooth implantation

A perfect, complete set of teeth is an important component of a confident smile. Persistent tooth loss can make tooth replacement very difficult, and bone grafting may be necessary in the case of dental implants. But why exactly? This will be discussed in more detail!

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN BE CAUSED BY PERMANENT TOOTH LOSS?

If there is a permanent tooth loss, it can be much more difficult to replace teeth than if the tooth loss is replaced immediately. In the case of permanent tooth loss, the missing tooth can be replaced by adjacent teeth which can move and fall in, causing problems for the whole row of teeth. In addition, the jawbone can atrophy during tooth loss, which means that bone replacement is necessary before implantation, as the implant cannot be fixed.

WHICH TREATMENTS CAN OUR PATIENTS CHOOSE TO FILL IN THEIR MISSING TEETH?

In the case of one or more missing teeth, dental implants are the most commonly recommended tooth replacement. This is because it is one of the most viable and fixed tooth replacement procedures available today. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone, which can be used as a root for the replaced tooth and used to build a crown or bridge over the missing tooth, depending on whether one or more teeth need to be replaced.

In our practice, our patients can choose from the highest quality dental implants with excellent healing rates. One of the options is the NeoDent implant, which has high stability and reliability, ensuring long-term results for an aesthetic and vibrant smile.
The other option is Straumann's premium quality Swiss product, Bone Level Tapered, which is also an obvious solution for our patients with limited bone volume. The implants we use allow for tooth replacement even in the case of bone grafting, so we can provide a solution for any tooth loss.

Both types of implants come with a lifetime guarantee, so that our patients can come to us with any problems or questions they may have, even after the implantation of their teeth.

WHEN AND HOW IS A SINUS LIFT OR BONE GRAFT REQUIRED BEFORE A TOOTH IMPLANT?

In the case of missing back teeth, if our patient has been suffering from tooth loss for a long time and over time bone resorption has occurred or the anatomical shape of the sinus is not correct, we can gain bone height by means of a sinus lift. However, we can only determine this accurately if our patient has undergone a preliminary dental consultation and diagnostics, which will help us to determine the necessary treatment during the tooth implantation.

    BONE REPLACEMENT BEFORE TOOTH IMPLANTATION

Following tooth loss or extraction, our bone at the site of tooth loss begins to atrophy and may be absorbed over time. In the case of someone with long-standing tooth loss, it is likely that bone grafting before tooth replacement will be unavoidable. However, this cannot be determined precisely in advance as every patient's case is different. This is why it is important to undergo a dental diagnostic before having a tooth replacement, after which our expert dentists will draw up a dental treatment plan, including the cost of the implant.

HOW IS BONE GRAFTING DONE BEFORE TOOTH IMPLANTATION IN THE DENTAL PRACTICE OF PUREDENTAL?

In our practice we plan and carry out all bone grafting and tooth implantation procedures on an individual basis. To do this, we first take a three-dimensional CT scan. Subsequently, bone grafting is carried out by building up the contour of the bone to be replaced with bone substitute and membrane, so that we can carry out the implantation after healing.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN BE USED FOR BONE GRAFTING BEFORE TOOTH REPLACEMENT?

In all our dental treatments, we offer our patients a personalised procedure. For example, in our bone grafting procedures, we try to take advantage of the beneficial effects of your own body, so we mix the bone grafting material with your own bone shavings to ensure that the bone cells in them increase the success rate of the bone graft.

The bone substitute is based on different membranes. There are two basic types of membranes, absorbable and non-absorbable.
The former is a collagen membrane that covers and fixes the bone substitute and has a positive effect on the healing of the surrounding gums. An important advantage is that, true to its name, it is absorbed and incorporated during the bone grafting process, so there is no need to remove it.

For larger bone grafting procedures, a non-absorbable membrane is preferred, as it is important that it maintains its function throughout the healing period to make room for bone growth.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REPLACE THE TEETH BEFORE THE BONE GRAFTING?

The healing period for bone grafting is 6-8 months, after which it is possible to place the dental implant, which involves the removal of the non-absorbable membrane.
