The active ingredient of professional teeth whitening is a gel based on hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. For the in-office procedure we use a higher concentration (about 25–40% hydrogen peroxide), for at-home tray therapy a lower concentration (about 10–16% carbamide peroxide). The gel penetrates through the micro-cracks of the enamel, breaks down the pigment molecules by an oxidative reaction and so lightens the tooth from the inside. LED light activation in the clinic speeds up this process.

The steps of the treatment
The treatment does not always require a separate dental consultation – our patients can also apply for teeth whitening directly. Before the treatment our dental hygienist examines the condition of the teeth and gums and checks whether the patient is suitable for teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening is always preceded by dental hygiene cleaning. We remove tartar with an ultrasonic scaler, clean the teeth of discolouration with Air-Flow sandblasting, and then make the tooth surface smooth and shiny by polishing. This is important because the whitening material only works on a completely clean enamel surface.
We apply a special professional whitening gel to the teeth, which penetrates deep into the micro-cracks of the enamel and releases the pigments from there. During the process there is no gum bleeding and no pain – any mild sensitivity at the neck of the teeth passes within a few hours, so you can carry on with your everyday activities straight after the treatment.
