Safe Laser soft laser treatment in dentistry

A painless, complementary treatment for faster, more comfortable healing

Safe Laser treatment is a soft-laser, also known as photobiomodulation complementary therapy, used in dentistry. After a tooth extraction, wisdom tooth surgery, implant placement, bone grafting or another oral surgery procedure, it can help support wound healing and may contribute to reducing pain, swelling and inflammatory symptoms.

At PureDental's clinic in Budapest's 2nd district, we use Safe Laser treatment on medical recommendation, as a complement to the primary dental or oral surgery treatment. The aim is to support the healing process and make the period after surgery more comfortable.

At a glance

In brief: what is Safe Laser treatment good for in dentistry?

Safe Laser treatment uses low-intensity light to support the biological processes of tissues. In dentistry we most often use it after surgery or a procedure, for example after a tooth extraction, wisdom tooth removal, implant placement, bone grafting or root canal treatment.

The aim of the treatment is not to replace the dental procedure, medication or post-operative instructions. It is rather a complementary option that in certain cases can contribute to more comfortable healing.

It most often comes up when the goal is:
  • to help reduce pain after surgery,
  • to help reduce swelling and inflammation,
  • to promote wound healing and regeneration,
  • to support healing after wisdom tooth surgery or a tooth extraction,
  • to aid soft-tissue regeneration after implant placement or bone grafting.
The doctor decides

Important: soft laser treatment is not necessary in every case and not suitable for everyone. The decision is always made by the treating doctor based on the individual situation.

Photobiomodulation (PBM)

What is Safe Laser treatment?

Safe Laser treatment belongs to photobiomodulation therapy (PBM). It used to be known as soft laser or low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

During the treatment, low-intensity red or near-infrared light is applied to the area being treated.

This is not the same as a surgical laser. A surgical laser works with higher energy and can be suitable for cutting, vaporising or tissue procedures. A soft laser, by contrast, does not cut and does not burn, and its purpose is not to remove tissue.

The aim is not to cut, vaporise or heat tissue, but to support the biological processes of cells with light energy. This is what makes it different from a surgical laser, which cuts and destroys: a soft laser does not cause tissue damage.

Soft laser (Safe Laser)

Does not cut, does not burn, does not cause tissue damage. It is used to support the biological processes of cells.

Surgical laser

Works with higher energy and can be suitable for cutting, vaporising or tissue procedures.

How does photobiomodulation work?

Red and near-infrared light can be absorbed by certain parts of cells, primarily the mitochondria, the cells' “power plants”. According to current scientific models, this can change the cells' energy metabolism, the activity of certain signalling processes, and the action of inflammatory substances and growth factors. Together these may support tissue regeneration.

Put more simply: a soft laser does not “fix” the problem by itself, but is a complementary light therapy that, when indicated, can support the body's natural healing processes.

A complement, not a replacement for the primary treatment

It is important that Safe Laser treatment does not replace the primary treatment, such as an extraction, root canal treatment, gum treatment or surgery, and it does not replace the medication recommended by your dentist either.

An inflamed tooth has to be treated. Acute inflammation around a wisdom tooth has to be assessed and treated from an oral surgery perspective. If you receive medication, a follow-up or special instructions after an extraction or implant placement, a soft laser does not replace them.

Safe Laser treatment can come into consideration alongside these, as a complement.

Areas of use

What do we use Safe Laser treatment for in dentistry?

In the scientific literature, photobiomodulation shows promising results in the following areas:

  • to help reduce pain after surgery,
  • supporting early wound healing,
  • helping to reduce swelling and inflammation after surgery,
  • reducing pain after some root canal treatments,
  • supporting regeneration after oral surgery procedures,
  • in some cases, supporting bone healing and bone remodelling.

Oral surgery: after tooth extraction and wisdom tooth surgeryMost common use

After a tooth extraction or other oral surgery procedure, a natural inflammatory reaction begins. It can bring pain, swelling and, temporarily, more difficult mouth opening or chewing. Safe Laser treatment can support early wound healing and may help reduce pain and swelling. We most often use it after tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal and other oral surgery procedures.

After implant placement and bone graftingSoft-tissue healing

After implant placement and bone grafting, the body needs time for the soft tissues to heal and for tissue regeneration. In such cases Safe Laser treatment can be used as a complementary option, primarily to support soft-tissue healing and comfort after surgery.

It is important that the success of an implant is not determined by the soft laser alone. Precise surgical planning, adequate bone volume, the primary stability of the implant, oral hygiene, avoiding smoking and keeping to follow-up check-ups remain essential.

After root canal treatmentReducing sensitivity

In the days after root canal treatment, the tooth may stay sensitive for a few days, especially when biting or tapping. This is often a natural reaction, because the tissues around the root tip heal after the treatment.

Safe Laser treatment can in some cases help reduce sensitivity after root canal treatment. It does not replace precise root canal treatment, proper disinfection, the root filling or the final restoration of the tooth, but it can come into consideration as a complementary option if the treating doctor considers it justified.

Periodontology (gum treatment)Complementary therapy

In gum disease, the primary treatment is always to remove the cause of the inflammation: dealing with tartar, plaque, deposits in the pockets and factors that keep the inflammation going. Alongside gum disease treatment and periodontal surgery, it can be used as a complementary therapy to support healing.

Here, too, the emphasis is on the complementary role. Safe Laser treatment does not cure gum disease on its own and does not replace periodontal treatment or regular maintenance therapy.

Oral wounds and mucosal changesDiagnosis first

Safe Laser treatment can also come into consideration as a complementary treatment for certain oral wounds, mucosal irritation or soft-tissue complaints after surgery. In these cases the aim is to improve comfort and support the healing process.

It is important to note, however, that for a persistent, non-healing wound, a white or red patch, a lump, or a mucosal change that bleeds easily or is of unknown origin, a diagnosis is needed first. In such a case laser treatment is not the first step, but a dental or oral surgery examination.

The course of treatment

How does Safe Laser treatment work?

The treatment is simple, quick and comfortable. From the patient's point of view:

  • it is non-invasive, with no cutting or needles,
  • it takes only a few minutes,
  • it is generally painless in itself, at most you may feel mild warmth,
  • it does not require anaesthesia.

During the treatment the dentist or assistant holds the head of the device against the area to be treated, from outside on the face or inside the mouth close to the wound. You may be given protective glasses for the duration of the treatment, because the laser light must not reach the eyes directly.

After the treatment you can carry on with your usual daily activities straight away. If the laser treatment takes place after surgery, you of course still need to follow the post-operative instructions: protecting the wound, taking your medication, attending the check-up and following the eating and cleaning rules.

How many treatments are needed?

The number and frequency of treatments are always determined by the doctor. It depends on the type of procedure, the size and depth of the treated area, and the wavelength and energy dose used. After oral surgery the treatment often starts on the day of the operation and can be repeated a few times over the following days.

Safety

Who is Safe Laser treatment not recommended for?

Soft laser treatment is safe, but there are situations where we do not use it, or only after individual consideration:

a known or suspected tumour in the area to be treated,

a non-healing oral wound or mucosal change of unknown origin,

taking medication that causes photosensitivity,

pregnancy, which you should always tell us about before the treatment,

a general illness or medication that may affect the treatment decision,

direct irradiation of the eye, which is why protective glasses are mandatory.

Before the treatment, please tell us about your illnesses, the medication you take regularly, any pregnancy, and anything else your doctor needs to know about.

Why choose it?

The benefits of Safe Laser treatment

01

Non-invasive complementary therapy

No surgical procedure and no tissue damage.

02

Supports regeneration

Aims to support healing processes at the cellular level.

03

Supports wound healing

Especially after oral surgery procedures.

04

More comfortable healing

In certain cases it can help reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.

05

Quick and painless

The treatment takes a few minutes and is generally painless.

06

Personalised

The doctor determines the protocol and the number of treatments.

What can you realistically expect from the treatment?

The results of research on photobiomodulation are encouraging, but the extent of the effect varies from person to person. A soft laser is not a miracle cure: it does not heal an inflamed tooth on its own, and it does not make painkillers or following your doctor's instructions unnecessary. It is a complementary option that, alongside the appropriate primary treatment, can contribute to more comfortable healing.

Transparent prices

How much does Safe Laser treatment cost?

Safe Laser treatment€47/ occasion

The price of Safe Laser treatment depends on the number of treatments and the size of the treated area. We state the cost of the treatment in the treatment plan, before the procedure. If we recommend it as part of a tooth extraction, wisdom tooth surgery, implant placement or bone grafting, we will tell you at the consultation how many sessions may be needed and what that costs.

Cost in the treatment plan

The cost depends on:

  • 01the number of treatments,
  • 02the size of the treated area,
  • 03whether we recommend the treatment on its own or as part of a tooth extraction, wisdom tooth surgery, implant placement or bone grafting.

Does Safe Laser treatment hurt?

No. A soft laser does not cut and does not burn the tissues. During the treatment you may feel mild warmth at most, and no anaesthesia is needed.

How long does one treatment take?

One treatment takes only a few minutes, depending on the size of the treated area. Afterwards you can carry on with your usual daily activities straight away.

What is the difference between a soft laser and a dental surgical laser?

A surgical laser cuts or vaporises tissue with high-energy light, which is why it is a surgical instrument. A soft laser uses low-intensity light that does not damage tissue but supports the cells' healing processes. Safe Laser treatment belongs to the latter, photobiomodulation group.

Does it reduce swelling after wisdom tooth surgery?

After wisdom tooth surgery, swelling is a natural reaction that is usually strongest on the 2nd to 3rd day. Safe Laser treatment is a complementary option that may help reduce swelling and pain, but it does not replace cold compresses, the prescribed medication or the post-operative instructions.

Does it replace painkillers or antibiotics?

No. Safe Laser is a complementary treatment that can be used alongside prescribed medication. Never stop taking medication prescribed by a doctor because of laser treatment.

Can I use my own Safe Laser device at home after a tooth extraction?

Many patients have a soft laser device at home. Before treating a fresh surgical wound, however, always check with your dentist, because the place, timing and dose of the treatment have to be matched to the procedure, and there are situations in which laser treatment is not recommended. In our clinic we carry out the treatment on medical recommendation, with precisely set parameters.

Is the treatment safe?

Yes, soft laser treatment is safe when used properly and does not cause tissue damage. You will be given protective glasses during the treatment. In certain cases, for example a tumorous lesion, photosensitising medication or pregnancy, individual consideration is needed, so please tell us about your conditions and medication before the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This is always decided by the doctor, based on the type of procedure and the treated area. After oral surgery we often start on the day of the operation, and we can repeat the treatment a few times over the following days.

Can I request it even if the surgery was not done at PureDental?

Yes, in certain cases it is possible, but an examination is needed first. For a fresh surgical wound or complaint we need to know what procedure was done, when, what medication you were given, and whether there is any sign of a complication. We only use Safe Laser treatment if we consider it professionally justified and safe.
